Relevant Experience:

- Medium Voltage Distribution
- Air Insulated Switches
- Lead Covered Cable
- PCB Containing Oil
- Transformer Replacement

Provided a study and follow on design providing air insulated switches to replace unsafe and outdated 15 kV load break oil switches serving the existing primary electrical distribution system. The existing systems were plagued with oil leaks from the oil switches which created environmental, personnel and fire hazards. The study examined various types of switches to replace existing oil switches within the same areas as the existing switches to avoid modifications to the existing buildings, to reduce maintenance and improve the reliability and safety of the existing electrical systems for the above referenced facilities.

The design provided for the removal of the existing system required proper handling of PCB containing oil and lead covered cables. Sequencing requirements and portable generators minimized outages. The design provided for different sized switches to meet space available around switch locations. Provided new Underground Duct banks. Provided additional lighting and access ramps to install and service new equipment.

The system at the Medical Center was designed with an inherent redundancy that was utilized to minimize outage during replacement. Replaced transformers at the National Naval Medical Center.
