Project Description

A custom manufactured air-handling unit located in the monument near the main entrance provides heating, cooling, and dehumidification to the entrance lobby and to both observation levels, approximately 500 feet above the lobby.

Designed a complete renovation of the mechanical and electrical systems for the Washington Monument. Construction began in the Fall of 1997 and was completed in the Spring of 1998. The work was performed concurrent with a renovation of the elevator and life safety systems.

All existing systems were removed from the below-grade mechanical equipment vault and chilled water and hot water systems for the monument were provided. Heat is rejected from the monument by underground remote condensers located in a remote bunker. The dehumidification provided by the system will help preserve the interior surfaces of the stone structure.

The electrical work included a new 2500 amp 208 volts 3 phase electric service, switchgear, and branch circuit distribution to serve mechanical systems and existing interior and exterior lighting.

The design included display lighting to illuminate commemorative stone markers located on the interior surfaces throughout the height of the monument.
