Working for Summer Consultants as a returning intern has been an incredibly rewarding experience. With a year of experience with the company already in my pocket, I felt that I was better prepared to understand and handle tasks sent my way, and I was able to jump into projects right away.
The most outstanding learning experience for me this internship was the opportunity to receive training for IES, a new energy-modeling software I had no prior experience with. Summer provided fantastic resources including videos and guides, as well as inviting coworkers who were happy to answer any questions, to help step through the process of using the IES software.
After about a week of training, the real learning began. I had the opportunity to apply what I just learned through a project I was given. The project required me to create an energy model of a building, modeling the geometry and acquiring room and system loads from ground-zero with just the building floor plans given to me in AutoCAD. Over the past couple of weeks working on this project, I was truly able to familiarize myself with IES and feel confident that I know the fundamentals to be able to use the software to create an energy model required for a project. This project was an excellent task for me to gain and develop new skills and truly gave me an invaluable experience during my internship.
